Life Force Arts Center sponsors the 2nd Annual Chicago Festival of Spiritual Art from May 28 - September 6.

Media and Mediums: Artists Who Channel will be presented as the Second Annual Chicago Festival of Spiritual Art at Life Force Arts Center Gallery, 3148 N. Lincoln Avenue, Chicago, from May 28 through September 6, 2010. This year’s festival is a summer-long exploration of the many ways contemporary artists understand their art as conduits for some greater energy than their personal energy or self. The festival includes visual and tactile art exhibits, performances, workshops, panel discussions, and other events to showcase the varied ways that artists, their art, and the spiritual dimension interact.

Joan Forest Mage, Executive Director of Life Force Arts Center, says of the theme of this year’s festival: “Media and Mediums is a play on words. ‘Media’ refers to different forms of artistic expression such as painting, sculpture, music, dance, and theater. But a ‘Medium’ is not only the material used to produce a work of art; it is also a person who channels spirits. As a shamanic practitioner myself, as well as a performing artist, I am fascinated by the ways that different ‘mediums’ (people who channel) engage various media (materials, techniques and forms of art) and use these to express themselves, and at a deeper level, to give voice to beings or energies existing in the spiritual realm.

“Some artists might define channeling simply as allowing the life energy to flow through their art, without identifying the energy as a separate spiritual entity. Nevertheless, all these artists feel that they are a conduit for some greater energy than their personal energy or normal sense of self.

This show reflects the basic approach of Life Force Arts Center: we do not follow a particular religious or spiritual belief. Rather, we provide a forum for artists who have various beliefs, traditions and approaches to the spiritual in life.”

Life Force Arts Center (LFAC), 3148 N Lincoln, Chicago, is Chicago’s spiritual art gallery and performance space.Our mission is creating spiritual awakening and transformation through the visual, literary and performing arts.

The Center presents spiritually based dance, theater, music, performance art, authors, and visual artists of all spiritual traditions. Life Force Arts Center opened in 2008, and is operated by Life Force Arts Foundation, which was founded in 1988 as a non-profit, tax exempt 501 (c) 3 organization to present the modern dance and performance work of Joan Forest Mage. As Joan developed the deeper, spiritual aspects of her work as shamanic practice, the company grew to support the exploration of the art-spirituality connection.

The Illinois State Museum Chicago Gallery’s Focus 4 runs from June 1 through September 24, 2010, and presents solo shows by Jacqueline Moses, Judith Raphael, Kevin Veara, and Mel Watkin.

RECEPTION FOR THE ARTIST IS FRIDAY, JUNE 11th, 2010 FROM 5pm to 7 pm.

Jacqueline Moses, of Chicago, is best known as a painter of landscapes that focus on transitions. Globalization Affects World Reactions investigates the space between our environment (earth) and realms of imagination where objects, such as houses, are displaced to float above distant and exotic lands. Her sculptural Reliquaries-Positive Alternatives integrates wood, organ pipes, slides of her artwork, and light to create memorials that reflect environmental concerns.

Judith Raphael creates a modern day coming-of-age story through portraits and narrative paintings of young women posed on the cusp of adolescence. Her subjects, fascinating, dignified, and poetic, are “feminine foot soldiers in the process of becoming women in a complex world.” They inhabit interior landscapes of uncertainty that are filtered through an airy brightness and clarity. Judith Raphael is from Chicago.

Kevin Veara draws and paints birds of the Sangamon River Valley, near Springfield, Illinois, that are found in the steep, forested banks and flood plains of the Sangamon River. His array of avian life, native and migratory, are often pictured as encircled by menacingly sharp-leaved plants that remind us of human complicity in climate change, habitat fragmentation, invasive species, and genetic modification.

Mel Watkin’s works-on-paper, Mapworks, 2001--2009, are created on out-of-date, road maps which are altered as she paints and draws onto them. Roads become rivers or are clogged with flowering vines. Coastlines are flooded, inland seas re-hydrated. Erosion, water, plant life, and fungi replace humanity as determining forces. They represent the past and future. Natural forms are based on flora and fauna surrounding her farmhouse in rural southern Illinois.

Using her artistic eye and camera, Joann Brennan makes photographs that inspire people think about wildlife conservation in a whole new way. Her exhibit, Managing Eden, comes to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (June 11-August/September) to provoke discussion about how our region is handling the conservation challenges that we face. By taking viewers into the lab and the field, Brennan depicts the actions we take to protect natural spaces, bringing our impact on nature into focus.

Spudnik Press is a comprehensive cooperative artist studio. Spudnik functions primarily as a space for artists to realize independent projects that require specialized equipment in the areas of Letterpress, Offset, Lithography, Intaglio, Relief, Silkscreen, mono-printing, and book binding. Peter Anton, a 78 year-old resident of East Chicago, Indiana, creates paintings that illuminate moments of significance from his personal history based on photographs he has obsessively compiled into a massive autobiography titled "Almost There." Discovering Peter creating portraits during a visit to Pierogi Fest, co-curators Dan Rybicky and Aaron Wickenden have spent the past four years documenting Peter's environment and day-to-day life of creating art under brutal conditions. Intuit is proud to take part in helping bring Peter's art to the public eye.

WICKER PARK BUCKTOWN PRESENTS MAKE BELIEVE:
REACTIVATING VACANT SPACES IN WICKER PARK BUCKTOWN
EXHIBIT OPENING JULY 15, 2010

WHAT: In response to the tremendous number of retail vacancies, WPB (Wicker Park Bucktown Special Service Area #33)launched a program aimed at reactivating these spaces by repurposing them for one of the coolest art contests Chicago has ever seen. The project is called Make Believe and it is opening July 15, 2010.

The exhibit opening will be celebrated with an opening night party (details below).

The public is invited to enjoy juror-selected art installations throughout the WPB neighborhoods from July 15-October 29, 2010 and vote online for their favorite—the winner will receive Chicago’s largest art prize ($5,500).

The aim of Make Believe is to reinvigorate these empty spaces and bring positive attention to the WPB neighborhoods with the end goal of helping to populate these spaces.

WPB hopes to heighten neighborhood pride, support local businesses, improve the pedestrian experience, garner exposure for vacant retail spaces and support the arts community. In addition, this fantastic art installation will improve the overall quality of the Wicker Park and Bucktown neighborhoods.

WHO: Finalists whose work has been installed in multiple vacant retail locations throughout the Wicker Park Bucktown neighborhood.

The public is invited to the opening celebration on July 15 at Pint Pub and to view and vote on the work throughout the neighborhood for the run of the show, July 15 – October 29.

About Wicker Park Bucktown Make Believe

Wicker Park Bucktown’s Make Believe Project (www.makebelieve.wegotitinwpb.com) provides an innovative approach to convert unused space into creative public spaces. Artist finalists were selected through an open application process followed by a juried review or renowned Chicago art professionals. The theme for the proposed use of space was RE:Imagining .The public can vote online for their favorite installation throughout the run of the show. The installation with the most votes will be awarded $5,500.

WPB, the special service area for the Wicker Park and Bucktown neighborhoods, exists to sustain and promote the prosperity and unique qualities of life of the Wicker Park Bucktown neighborhood and commercial district, whilst preserving its diverse character for the benefit of its residents, visitors, and businesses through the wise and discerning investment of resources to enhance the community’s public ways.

The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is proud to welcome The Chicago Printmakers Collaborative [CPC] and Anchor Graphics for an exhibition of recent works. Incised, Bitten and Gouged, three printmaking terminologies, alludes to the numerous printmaking techniques represented in this group exhibition. Artists from CPC and Anchor Graphics will show works made in intaglio, silkscreen, embossment, woodcut, lithography and various innovations on traditional printmaking techniques. For a little over two decades, CPC and Anchor Graphics have stood as two of the central printmaking institutions in Chicago. Both provide a nurturing collaborative work environment, as well as access to the spectrum of equipment and materials necessary to the various printmaking techniques. Lincoln Square’s Chicago Printmakers Collaborative was founded by Deborah Maris Lader in 1989 as a studio workspace for artist-printmakers to ‘pursue their work and broaden their knowledge of printmaking media’. What began as studio space has since expanded its activities to holding exhibitions, and offering workshops and classes to the public. CPC is composed of over 100 members from 14 different countries, working in intaglio, lithography, relief, monotype, screen print, and photo processes. In recognition of CPC’s innovation and significance among Chicago arts organizations, Lader was recently awarded the Columbia College Chicago Paul Berger Arts Entrepreneurship Award. Anchor Graphics was founded the year prior to CPC, and was established as an independent non-profit in 1990, with the mission of providing printmaking facilities and studio space, and educational opportunities to young people and professional artists. It has initiated a multitude of partnerships with local arts, educational and social organizations, strengthening its ability to fulfill its mission of education and public access to printmaking arts. Since 2006, Anchor Graphics has been partnered with Columbia College Chicago, operating out of an on-campus facility. This partnership serves both the school and Anchor Graphics by providing academic internship opportunities, collaborative projects, classes and a platform for visiting artists and lecturers from across the country. Incised, Bitten and Gouged offers a terrific opportunity to survey the recent creative outpouring from two of Chicago’s acclaimed printmaking collaborative studios. A Year in Humboldt Park is the naturalist photo essay of the year 2009 by Dina Petrakis, curated by Candice Martens.

Exhibition is at the Humboldt Park Boathouse, 1359 N. Sacramento in Chicago, August 11 through October 29, 2010. Gallery hours: Friday 6-8pm and Saturday 1-4pm. August 11th opens with SummerDance at Humboldt Park.

Repeating images of iconic Park views and individual photographs reflect the richness and diversity of a life cycle in the Park.

Janine Fron will lead rounds of playing Prairie Prose with visitors to the gallery. The locally made green game was inspired by Jens Jensen and Prairie School History in which players create poems from nature, Saturday, September 4th, 1pm.

Presentation of his report, Birds of Humboldt Park, by Sam Burckhardt, including the birds he and others have encountered in the Park, survey of breeding birds, and the significance of the park for migrating and resident birds. Afterward, we will move to the terrace overlooking the Lagoon and see what birds can be seen from there. Please, bring your binoculars if you have a pair. Saturday September 4th, 3pm.

Bridge & Theater Galleries Exhibit:

Reception: September 17, 7-9pm

This exhibition will feature cheerful acrylic paintings by Mary King and black and white photographs by Gary Cialdella which celebrate the industrial areas of southeast Chicago and northwest Indiana that some people live in the midst of and other people do not realize still exist.

King and Cialdella take two very different approaches in representing this area, but the work of both makes clear their understanding, and even love for, this part of the greater Chicago region.

Mary King exhibits widely. She has had one-person shows in New York, Chicago and Detroit. TheChicago Reader and The New York Times like her. She lives and works in Chicago.

Gary Cialdella is a native of Blue Island. He lives in Michigan and works in Michigan and Chicago. His book The Calumet Region: An American Place was published by The University of Illinois Press in 2009. Works from the book will be included in the exhibition.

Jerrold Maddox is a photographer who lives in central Pennsylvania, where he teaches at Penn State University. After many years as an exhibiting painter he turned to photography and digital media in 1990. Most of the photographs in this exhibition were taken within walking distance of his home in Pennsylvania Furnace. There are also a few taken in Tokyo and England.

Included in the exhibit are a series of screen and digital prints made to be given away - they are in stacks on boxes in front of the windows. Please take copies, if you want them.

The Fall season of exhibitions at the Robert F DeCaprio Art Gallery opens with the weird and wonderful Poissons de Chant - a series of prints illustrating the adventures of a mythical troupe of singing fish from Montreal. The fish and their escapades are the digital imaginings of California-based artist Tom Lundquist.

In his intriguing picture-stories of the "Poissons" we find a cast of characters including production assistants, agents, accountants, and animal performers that work for the fish. The fish themselves are usually hidden in ingenious ways. Curious titles such as "Negotiating with Sheep" and " The poissons push forward in their plan to rescue Rene Magritte" pull the viewer into a surreal and distorted fishbowl world.

Tom Lundquist lives in Santa Monica, California and is Professor of Drawing and Computer Graphics at Santa Monica College.

"Since I was a small child, every summer was marked by my family’s migration by car to spend a month in Mexico. The trip would begin at home in Chicago and go as far south as Mexico City. We would make multiple stops in different towns and cities to visit with our extended family. I started taking pictures in the early 1990’s and since have made several trips on my own. The Joke is Irresistible challenges various tropes of masculinity and the gendered gaze. By borrowing from the feminist tradition and applying the same tools to questions of masculinity, an area that remains largely unexplored in gender studies scholarship, some featured artists parody stereotypes of masculinity while others literalize them. All are serious considerations of what it means to engender masculinity in a way that broadenshow we understand gendered associations in the world around us. The Ways of Connecting the Floor to the Ceiling

The Ways of Connecting the Floor to the Ceiling investigates the creative process through the useof material and language. An installation or a material component of process,tufts of raw wool and hair will morph into an abstract surface of feltedfibers, growing out of the architecture and spreading throughout the gallery.The artists will open the gallery to visitors as they construct the space,ultimately creating an environment of process. The visitors will becomeparticipants as they move through the space, creating a collective path byfelting the raw materials on the floor with their feet. As the space congeals,a reading will occur at the end of the show, bringing writers whose process isevident in their final product into the space, to build upon the environment ofexperiment, chance, intention, and the spirit of continuum.

The Ways of Connecting the Floor to the Ceiling is a collaborative exhibition by Elizabeth MetzgerSampson and Shannon Schmidt, both writers and artists living and working inChicago. The exhibition is ongoingfrom September 1st to the 15th with an opening on Friday,September 10th and a reading on Tuesday, September 14th.

REACTIVATING VACANT SPACES IN WICKER PARK BUCKTOWN
EXHIBIT OPENING JULY 15, 2010

The exhibit opening will be celebrated with an opening night party (details below).

The aim of Make Believe is to reinvigorate these empty spaces and bring positive attention to the WPB neighborhoods with the end goal of helping to populate these spaces.

WHO: Finalists whose work has been installed in multiple vacant retail locations throughout the Wicker Park Bucktown neighborhood.

The public is invited to the opening celebration on July 15 at Pint Pub and to view and vote on the work throughout the neighborhood for the run of the show, July 15 – October 29.
